It's not a bird. It's not a fighter jet. But it'll draw a crowd like no other animal known to frequent Virginia Beach. It's a bottlenose dolphin!

These beautiful creatures are often seen from our lovely beach. You'll even run across them when renting a personal watercraft -- or by taking a relaxing dolphin watching cruise. Be careful though. Steering your watercraft into a pod of dolphins is illegal. And while it's not illegal to try and pet one, don't be surprised if it bites you (remember, they are wild animals).

Dolphins are one of the smartest animals in the ocean. So it's no wonder they like to visit Virginia Beach! They are very friendly and curious. They can live up to twenty years and may grow to a length of ten feet.

So while you're vacationing here this summer, be sure to look for dolphins. Sighting one could bring you very good luck!
