Renewed Life Comes to East Coast Surfing Championships
The 2009 East Coast Surfing Championship event will celebrate its’47th year in production as over 100 of the worlds best surfing professionals will gather at the southern end of the Virginia Beach resort strip from August 27th to the 30th to compete.
A cherished affair in the surf and skate community in Virginia Beach since 1963, the East Coast Surfing Championships have attained legendary status as the nations’ longest running surf competition; the second longest continuously run surf event in the world.
In order to reverse a trend of apparent waning event sponsorship and attendance, The Virginia Beach Jaycees have signed on former ECSC event chairman and Resort Management head George Alcarez to breathe renewed life into this year’s championship event.
With a strong connection to the event and deep rooted passion for the surf community, Alcarez has shaken things up a bit to boost sales and promotions of this years’ event. One of the most significant and effective changes being the events’ charitable organization designation that will allow event sponsors and volunteers to write off the cost of participation as a charitable donation.
Further, Alcarez and Deepak Nachnani of Coastal Edge – ECSC’s main sponsor – have brought in some of the surf and skate industry’s most recognizable companies to attend; a fact that should most definitely entice surf zealot’s to the Virginia Beach Boardwalk on event weekend.
As is expected, the venue will generate a festive outdoor experience to be revered. From music, movies, beer tents and bikini contests to surf, sand sports, paddling and triathlon competitions, the ’09 ECSC event will reinforce its’ reputation as one of the world’s premiere beach and surf celebrations.
Even though it’s prime season for Virginia Beach hotels, accommodations are available so be sure and plan ahead.
