The Francis Land House / Historic Site and Gardens (also known as Rose Hall) is owned by the City of Virginia Beach and is located at 3131 Virginia Beach Blvd. Years ago the Land House flourished as a busy Plantation located just off the Pine Tree branch of the Lynnhaven River.

Once Upon Another Time (Kindergarten)

Life was very different 200 years ago. Through the use of reproduction artifacts, students will "touch history" to discover the changes that have taken place over time. This participatory program will develop listening and group conversation skills. The students will be given an opportunity to ask "how" and "why" questions and to distinguish between basic needs and wants. The students will play colonial games and visit with a colonial tradesperson.
This program addresses Virginia Standards of Learning:

Then and Now (1st Grade)

This combination of "show and tell" and inquiry will promote critical thinking and conversation skills. Students will learn how children lived, worked and played long ago. Through the use of reproduction artifacts, the students will compare life "then" to life "now" and investigate the changes that have occurred over time. The students will learn the importance of plants and animals on the colonial plantation. Students will identify the resources needed to survive 200 years ago.

Natives and Colonists (2nd Grade)
Grade Level: 2nd Grade

Students explore the lives of the earliest residents of Virginia Beach as they study the food, clothing, tools and homes of these people. Students see examples of the barter system by exploring the trading done by the Native Americans and the Colonists. Students learn the physical and demographic changes that occurred in our area as a result of English colonization. They will understand the use of plants and animals by the Native Americans and Colonists. Reproduction artifacts are used in each learning area so that the students can touch in order to better understand life long ago. This year's program includes the special exhibit "The Nansemond Indians: We're Still Here." Students will see authentic Native American stone points and tools, thousands of years old, discovered in southeastern Virginia. They will also see more modern images of local native peoples and gain an understanding that our communities today contain descendants of both Natives and Colonists.

On Our Own: Plantation Life (3rd Grade)

Students will explore the life on a self-sufficient plantation. This program offers the student an excellent opportunity to study the history of this area. Through the use of reproduction artifacts, your students will be able to "touch history." They will learn how plantation residents were truly on their own and how they learned to use natural resources. The use of renewable and nonrenewable resources will be discussed. Students will play a variety of 18th-century games, learn about the life of a colonial planter and his family and tour the historic house.

The study of Colonial Virginia history will come ALIVE to your students in three interactive, hands-on learning stations at the Francis Land House. The use of reproduction artifacts allows your class to "touch history!"
Your students will:
Learn about the various groups of people that made up the colonial society and their roles in history by exploring the lives of the gentry landowners, the middling sort, trades-people and the African-American slaves.
Participate in small group activities that will encourage critical thinking.
Experience the life of 200 years ago through hands-on activities.
Group activities will explore:
Education and social deportment of the time.
Production of cloth.
Variety of crops grown.
Trade and transportation routes.
Use of natural resources.
This program is designed to give your students a real understanding of colonial Virginia history in the context of a small southern plantation.

Outreach Programs for In-class Presentation
The Francis Land and Adam Thoroughgood Houses offer a wide variety of SOL and curriculum-based programs in the school setting.

A Child's Life in 17th-Century Virginia Beach: Playing and Learning Long Ago
Grade Level: Kindergarten and 1st Grade
Time Required: 30 minutes
Fee: $15.00 Per Presentation, 1 Class Per Presentation

Life was very different 300 years ago. Children had lots of "chores" to do, but there was time for learning and for games. Games and toys of early America will be explored in this curriculum-based program. Students will be asked to compare and contrast the life of children today to those of long ago. Students will be given the opportunity to play some of the colonial games and to explore the various forms of education in Early America. The outreach teacher will conduct the program in period clothing.

Virginia: The Bounteous New World
Grade Level: Grades 2nd through 5th
Time Required: 45 Minutes
Fee: $35.00 Per Presentation, 2 Classes Per Presentation

The early colonists needed to be very resourceful. The plantations of early Virginia Beach were far from stores. The use of available resources in this bounteous new world was very important. Explore wood, horn, antler and other plant and animal resources used by early settlers Adam Thoroughgood and Francis Land. The use of reproduction artifacts will let your students "touch history." The outreach instructor will be dressed in period clothing.
"Memory Bags" containing two pencils, reproduction colonial currency, two postcards, a bookmark and a brochure are available at $1.00 per bag with at least two weeks notice.

A Trip Through Time

Two great historic houses and 300 years of local history! This field trip opportunity lets your students visit both the Adam Thoroughgood House and the Francis Land Houses to explore life in 17th and 18th-century Virginia. You can send up to three (3) classes to the Adam Thoroughgood House for the 17th-century educational program while up to three (3) other classes go to the Francis Land House to experience the 18th-century programming. At the end of each program they will board their "time machine" (school bus) and travel to the other site for their program. All programs will be completed by 12:30PM.
