As I left the theater a few weeks ago after viewing the Avengers I let out a sigh... I looked over at my friend and said "We just need to find an Avenger and be with them!" We both laughed and headed home, but it left me thinking about it.
In the movie, Nick Fury delivers this line: "There was an idea to bring together a group of remarkable people, so when we needed them, they could fight the battles that we never could..."
Although it’s been a few weeks since I saw the movie, that line has stuck with me. And I’ll tell you why. It hit me, we have modern day heros; and NO I’m talking about the about the men that wear capes and film themselves for youtube. I’m talking about the men and women that serve daily in the military and law enforcement.
Let me tell you a story of one real life hero. His name was Kurt. He had dedicated his life to service, a marine turned police officer, he was a highly respected up and comer. His life was cut short when he was killed at 24, leaving behind a wife with a young son and a baby girl on the way.
He was one of the best men I had ever met. I will never forget and always remember the sacrifice he made a year ago today.
A year ago today, I made a vow, a quite promise to myself that I would live because he couldn’t. That I would go out of my way to thank any man or woman in uniform because I know that they may not be coming home. A year ago today a hero died and his child, a healthy baby girl was born.
Yesterday was D Day and for the first time in my life, it actually meant more than just a random day in history that we remember because some men died. These men and women were and are, mothers, fathers, sons, and daughters, husbands and wives that have devoted a life to serve and protect strangers like ourselves.
We should thank them, we should respect their sacrifice. They are our modern day heros, they are our modern day Avengers.
