Three People Hospitalized After Two Car Accidents on High Street

PORTSMOUTH, Va. (WAVY) - Three people were hospitalized after two car accidents on High Street this afternoon that appear to be related.

The first crash happened just before 2 p.m. Investigators said an SUV hit a gold car going in the opposite direction.

The car ran off the road and slammed into a garage in the 3800 block of High Street., near Orange Street.

"We heard a crash, sounded like a dump truck, 10 seconds later, heard another crash. My friend saw the car fly through the lawn," said Krista Phelps, a witness.

Crews took the driver and a front seat passenger to the hospital.

Police said about three minutes later, the SUV continued in the westbound lane and hit a second silver vehicle head-on in the area of High Street at Hartford Street.

Crews took one person in that accident to the hospital.

Police are still investigating.

High Street is closed in both directions east of the Churchland Bridge near Willet Avenue.

Police said the closure is expected to last for the next several hours. Drivers traveling west from downtown Portsmouth are being asked to take I-164 or I-264. Contact the police if you have any further information.
