The Tidewater Winds is a non-profit organization which provides FREE CONCERTS in Virginia Beach, Norfolk, Chesapeake, and Portsmouth during the month of July. See what kinds of concerts are in store this July! This year there are four themed programs, one per week, starting Sunday, July 6, 2014.
Trans Siberian Winds:
Transcriptions are a mainstay of the modern day wind band. This program features transcriptions of some of the great classical music of all time. The second half takes a unique twist, and new look as we take a listen of the music from video games such as Halo and Kingdom Hearts, as well as a rock version of Respighi’s Pines of Rome from the pen of local composer James L. Hosay. Come prepared for something very different!
Of Silence and Sound:
When movies were silent and music was king!
Lights, camera, action… MUSIC! The Tidewater Winds visits some of the great music of the silent film era. Not only will you hear the music, but you will be able to see the silent films that go along with the score. You’ll see Chaplin in “The Adventurer," the film score of “Victory at Sea” set to music, and local composer James Hosay’s “First Light on the Chesapeake,” with scenes from right here in Hampton Roads. It’s all about the film and the music, but please remember… no talking!
This program runs the gamut from stormy weather to a sunrise, a balmy love song to a thunderous finale. We will begin with Copland’s “An Outdoor Overture” and journey through Gershwin’s “Summer Time." The view from your neck of words will also include Thunder and Lighting in the form of a polka by Strauss. The forecast for Weather Report is sure to affect your climate, end in a rainbow, and change your mood… no umbrella required!
BIG BAND THEORY:
Big Band Music to Reminisce, Dance, and Swing to!
The Tidewater Winds changes gears and breaks out the Big Band. We will take a nostalgic look at some classic jazz tunes, big band standards, ballroom classics, vocal favorites, as well as some exciting new contemporary arrangements you are sure to enjoy. We’re unraveling the mystery of the swing phenomenon... It’s a Big Band Theory, and it’s not science, but we hypothesize you’ll love it!
