The DaVita Kidney Awareness Run|Walks are a series of 5K fun run and walk events held in 10 cities across the nation. About 31 million American adults, or 1 in 6, have chronic kidney disease (CKD) and most of them don't know it. With most people, there are no symptoms of CKD until the disease reaches an advanced stage.
Currently, close to 400 citizens here in Virginia Beach have progressed to kidney failure and must receive dialysis treatments to stay alive. And diabetes and high blood pressure are on the rise and with a state obesity rate of over 25%, many more are at risk. Please join us by registering free in advance online at www.kidneyawarenesstime.org and help spread the word about kidney disease.
Our local run/walk will be held on Sunday, 10/24/10 at Mount Trashmore Park in Virginia Beach, VA at 9a and will last until about 12p. Those who raise at least $25 in donations will receive a commemorative t-shirt. Raise $75 and you also get an aluminum water bottle; raise $150 and a cool backpack is also yours. The funds raised will benefit The Kidney TRUST, a non-profit organization founded by DaVita.
Kidney disease screening will be offered onsite by The Kidney TRUST at no cost to participants. There's also face painting, a bouncy house and games for the kids, entertainment, refreshments, a kidney health expo, and Ripples, the Kidney Awareness Time KAT.
