rant on
Long story, but I've been mad for a few months about stubborn and ignorant previous coworkers.
So i quit walmart a week ago but stuff is still on my mind. Like two months ago when our old german door greeter came rushing to the front entrance of the registers and frantically tells me to get a manager. I ask him what's up and he still is suggesting that I get a manager. I chose not to at the moment because a manager is going to be able to do what I can already, plus I'm closer.
Door greeter Bert leads me to the exit door where we have some type of middle eastern asian man with like a 12x12 box filled with smaller boxes of pharmacy needles that are sold behind the counter. Neither one of them spoke good english. The door greeter hands me the customer's receipt and immideately starts to accuse the guy of being a theif while the asain/eastern guy joins in and it becomes a full blown arguement. I'm like, "it's ok Bert (door greeter) and I'm sorry (to the customer)"...just trying to end the arguement. But the door greeter keeps going at it with him. Beetween trying to end that, I do his job of checking the receipt with the UPC on the back of the packages. Everything was ok and paid for.
He tells me that he just wanted to make sure and when I tell him it's ok, he's still going at it with the customer. I really wanted to tell our guy to just stfu or just appologize. I mean, the guy has two tasks in his job. Check the receipt with the items and say bye. Obviously if it's on the receipt he paid for it, no brainer. Another supervisor notices the confrontation and tries to help out. That's when I leave because I'm thouroughly pissed at Bert for accusing a customer of theft and intentionally starting an arguement. So I walk away. Half an hour later or less I see Bert getting pulled into the managers office and get's coached (which was what I was planning on doing before a manager got to him). I'm thinking it's probably for that arguement...but it was really for punching/assaulting that customer! A month later I hand him a letter, sure enough it was a letter from that customer's lawyer. I don't understand a few things. One is why we still have Bert. He obviously can't do his job, he can't be reasonable, he can't control his temper and he is a threat to customers and the company. He's been in America for 10 years and is still a dumb ass stubborn German. Everything's done Bert's way, there is no being rational with an old german.
Another. I ask the guy to keep the area around the exit door clean at all times (the register, counter and the rotating thing with the bags) because it's always a mess with newspapers, trash, returns and personal belongings. It's the last thing customers see. Is that asking much? He replies that I give him such a hard time and he hasn't slept in days because he's so stressed and paranoid because of me. My theory is that it's like having a party at your house. Even if the mess wasn't created by you or if it was, you're still responsible for cleaning your house. You're also responsible for keeping your work area clean, especially if your boss says so. No shit, just do it.
On more. Our policy states that if you buy shit on your lunch or break it has to be put in one of three areas: behind the customer service desk, in your car, or in your locker. Most of the stuff littered on the register, in a cart near the register and counter is his or another greeters. I inform him that it's not ok to keep stuff there because it could lead to theft or being returned and that would be a loss to the company. He says ok. Next day he does it again. When he leaves, I return all his stuff to the shelves. He gets uber pissed and defends a right to keep his stuff where it is even if it's against policy. He leaves the exit door, comes to the service desk and starts to flat out yell at me while I'm ten feet away. I'm like, so you want to play hardball with me? Needless to say I chewed him out while a few customers are staring. That's when I quit and walked away. So within the next week I catch him again, this time he gets an approval from a manager. I'm like, it's against policy and it's my front end that he's trashing! After that he doesn't get approval, he just decides to hide his stuff in and around the register.
He's so lucky I'm not a manager otherwise I'd fire him in a heart beat. Change is good, being a stubborn old german isn't...
