From what you've told us about your nephew I have no doubt he'll do great as a LEO. The Marine Corp taught him discipline and gave him direction. This will give him purpose. Tell him I said good luck. If you would, share this little bit of wisdom with him. Always remember, It's better to be judged by twelve than carried by six.
I'm very sorry to hear about your mother medical condition. I pray that it is something simple or that if it is indeed a tumor, it's benign.
