My first job was at an Auction House moving antique furniture out to trucks. Made really good money but it was also really hard physical work. Wal-Mart is a great first job. Stay away from fast food though. I have a lot of respect for fast food workers. They work their asses off for minimum wage. Granted most of them can't do simple math which is probably why they work fast food.

Yeah, and now McD's doesn't even let them greet the customers anymore. They have a female recording. You hear a female voice greet you and ask for your order, and then the real person actually repeats it back to you (it's real weird when a male repeats back the order). Does this mean that they're not even trusted to do a simple task like greeting a customer and asking for their order? Pathetic.

After hearing some of the ways these people greet customers I think it was a good idea to go with a recording. I was in a McDonalds drive thru the other day and had the live male ask me "welcome to McDonalds, what you want?" That isn't even a complete sentence. I'm sure he was missing the word "do" in there somewhere.

Working at Mickey D's was a lot different in 1976 or 77 than it is today. Not only was minimum wage $2.65/hour - you were kept busy your whole shift. No standing around blabbing. If you had nothing to do, you went and cleaned all the tables and mopped the floor. If you had just done it 3 minutes ago, then you went and did it again.

Back then, we also cooked the hamburgers too - didn't slap some rubbery piece of meat into a microwave to rewarm.

The good old days...

$6.90/hr as a cashier. Pay sucks, but she said that I might be able to be a department manager within 6 months. Scheduling on Friday for 40 hrs/wk

Did you take our advice, or just look pathetic and beg for the job?
