Steel / Metals industry

What a bunch of shit!

I'm so lucky to now have to deal with buying large quantities of stainless steel at work.

I love how they quote a price and then say that the price really depends on the mill. Oh- and then there's the surcharge in effect at the time of delivery which pretty much doubles the price.

Kind of like - "Fuck you - you need us more than we need you"

Why are you buying large quantities of stainless steel?

Oh, so now you're switching from aluminum to stainless? Stainless merely conducts outside influence waves.

Purchasing is now being brought into my department. So now, I get to buy the stuff too. We use lots of stainless in our manufacturing.

Ah yes, consolidation. We can lay this whole department off and move their responsibilities over to this other department. So now they can support the application software AND provide purchasing service (along with the other areas of responsibility that we've already given to them -- like Help Desk, Administration and even Custodial). It's brilliant! Pretty soon, we'll only have a single department to deal with.

Wal-Mart does the same, layoff layaway accociates and customer service associates so the few CSM's can do everything. Layoff cashiers so lines get long and have barely any management on staff to maintain things.

Stainless steel is quite expensive. I was looking at some flat sheets to buy, relatively small and they were nearly 300 each. Are they for piping?

If you buy abour 100,000 pounds, it's around $3.00 per pound
