All in all - pretty good.
Got off to a slow start - a little unorganized but we recovered.
I started with the skid pad. Kind-a funny - driving around a corner too fast with wet road conditions used to be my favorite thing to do when I was 16. Guess I've mellowed over the years as I had to really force myself to go fast enough to get sideways. It was also a little tough to get used to teh car. We drove BMW 330i for this part. I haven't driven a BMW in 20 years. They're much nicer and drive better now.
The autocross was a blast. Definitely the high point of the afternoon. We drove Boxters. I took to that much quicker. I may try a little autocross racing on my own after I get home. May go seek out a club to get started.
Then we practiced braking with ABS. Basically, go up to 50-53mph - mash the brakes. THen the same plus turn. I've never been a big fan of ABS, so it was weird to turn hard while braking hard but it went OK. Got to drive a Carrera, M5 and Boxter in that exercise. Carrera had the most balls, but still nothing like the Viper.
Then, back to the skid pad. This time, power sliding around the turn. Back in he 330i again. Started to get a better feel for the car.
Then at teh end of the day, the instructors gave us a lively ride around the autocross in the Viper Coupe (Gen 3). Honestly, it didn't impress me. I'll get to drive it tomorrow - so I'll hold off on final judgement, but, mine looks nicer, sounds nicer and I think it's a bit quicker. We'll see.
Tomorrow, we're back on the skid pad, then we're out on the real track - Laguna Seca for the afternoon. They won't let us take the Vipers out there. I think we'll have the boxters, carrera and M5.
I'm pooped. Looking forward to tomorrow. See part II of my report then
