VA Beach Cruise Guide
Virginia Beach hosts the East Coast Surfing Championship in 2004
From August 25th to the 29th, Virginia Beach is overrun by gnarly dudes and roxy girls.

They all have their eyes on the prize. Most people don't think of Virginia when they think surfing, but there is a reason they come to crush the waves here. A win at the ECSC means top sponsorships and lots of other opportunities for amateur surfers. The ECSC is the longest continuously running surfing championship in the United States, which earns it respect amongst the top brass.

Don't be fooled, Virginia Beach is no slouch when it comes to waves. You won't find these curls on the New England shores. If you're an east coaster, it's not unusual for you to pack your bags and take your board to VB.

This year, Scion brought a little something in their pocket as well. The Red Bull Half Pipe was enough to lure kids from 5 to 55. Showcasing skateboarding talent as deep as the X-games Vert Ramp Gold Medalist Bucky Lasek and Silver Medalist Pierre Luc Gagnon, the pros came out to put on a show. If you haven't seen these riders in action, put it on your list. Just looking into a half-pipe is enough to give you the shivers. Imagine dropping into it and rocketing up the other side for 7, 8, 9 feet of airborne bliss.

When you're not watching the extreme sporting events, the ECSC always has a showcase of bands on their concert stage. This year's line-up included bands like Remedy Motel, The SURGE!, Lit and Cracker. This is the same stage where Pucker puts on it's Bikini Content on both Saturday and Sunday. Nothing says fun in the sun quite like a bikini!

Another great reason to check out the ECSC in Virginia Beach is the time of year it's held. By August, the ocean water is incredibly warm, and swimming is a must. Nothing beats the end of season sales being held at all of the surf/skate shops. It's the perfect time for picking up 'back-to-school' clothes that you can't get anywhere else but the beach.

Want to learn how to surf? It's easier than you think! There are lots of instructors that are willing to give you personal lessons. Private or groups, it's something you really need to try. For more information, check our our surfing guide.

The surfing competition draws more than 100,000 people to the beach each year. What's really amazing is that it doesn't seem crowded at all. Sure, there are a lot of people, but everyone's having a good time and enjoying the many shows. These guys have been putting this event on for a long time, and they know how to make it fun for everyone.

So if you missed it this year, be sure to mark your calendar for next year. When the surf's up and the sun's shining, there's lot of fun to be had. See you next year!
