2 May 2007 12:17 PM The Virginia Aquarium, or the Virginia Marine Life Museum is home to the largest aquarium in Virginia and is a hop-skip-and-a-jump away from Virginia Beach. Plan to spend four or five hours enjoying the natural wonder when you visit. Accompanying the aquarium is the IMAX theater, the Owl Creek Marsh Pavilion, a nature trail, and various presentations delivered several times a day. The Virginia aquarium displays some of the largest marine animals in the world. The visitor to the Virginia Aquarium can expect to see several species of sharks, large sea turtles, stingrays, a life-size model of a humpback whale, several varieties of octopus, as well as many different species of freshwater and saltwater fish. The Virginia Marine Life Museum and aquarium also offers boat tours out into the open ocean. Choose from a dolphin sighting excursion or a whale watching tour or a boat exploration of the local estuaries and their flora and fauna. Be sure to make reservations well in advance for one of these boat tours. The seats fill up quickly! One of the most innovative features of the Virginia Marine Life Museum and aquarium is a large-scale aquarium built as a replica of the Norfolk Canyon, a natural underwater trench that houses a variety of marine life. The Norfolk Canyon aquarium simulates the conditions of the deep-sea trench, even down the smallest details. The aquarium boasts a faux sunken ship that offers an undersea view for the museum's visitors. Watch the sharks and the other marine life from a unique and safe vantage point. While you're enjoying your stay in Virginia Beach, check out the Virginia Aquarium. You'll be glad you did. |
