Virginia Beach Mount Trashmore is a unique city park built in Virginia Beach.  Mount Trashmore was originally a landfill, which was converted in the 1970's into lush green city park by adding layers of solid waste separated by layers of soil and rock.  Mount Trashmore is the first landfill to ever be converted into a city park, and served as the model for other cities to follow in converting their landfills into beautiful public parks.  Mount Trashmore is now one of the most visited city parks in Virginia and serves a testament to the ecological pioneering of the city of Virginia Beach.  Mount Trash more stands at almost seventy feet above sea level and covers a surface area of more than 160 acres.  This innovative park also offers a skateboarding park that has become especially popular with amateurs and professionals.  The skateboarding area of the park was recently rebuilt after a devastating fire destroyed most it.  Mount Trashmore often hosts outdoors concerts, plays, outdoor movies, and many other outdoor recreational events.  Mount Trashmore also features two lakes that cover almost seventy-nine acres.  Mount Trashmore offers several covered pavilions for picnics and many walking trails.  The park also boasts an innovative garden design that teaches people how to grow an effective garden using less water resources.   Mount Trashmore offers temptations for the entire family.  For the children, Mount Trashmore offers a large playground built entirely by volunteer efforts.  Kite flying is favorite activity by park patrons.  The city park hosts over 800,000 visitors annually.
