Legends Walk

484 Viking Drive, #151, Virginia Beach, VA 23452
757-463-4500
Description:

Virginia Beach is a fantastic place to live and a great spot to take a vacation. There is always something to do, whether it is enjoying the waves, eating at the fine restaurants or shopping. For history buffs who think they have seen it all, a can’t-miss attraction that is often overlooked is the Virginia Beach Legends Walk.

The Virginia Beach Legends Walk is located near the oceanfront at 13th Street Park, sandwiched between the Pacific and Atlantic Avenues. The entrance is easy to spot thanks to a nice stone archway. This area is easy to access by walking and there are many other pedestrian-friendly areas to visit in the surrounding vicinity. The walk is a free experience and a lovely one at that. On a nice day you can enjoy the paved walkway and beautiful landscaping that the area has to offer. Who doesn’t enjoy a good stroll?

Like the Hollywood Walk of Fame, The Virginia Legends Walk is a self-guided tour in an area dedicated to great Virginians from the past, as well as present, that have in one way or another made a big impact on our country. These legendary Virginians were either born in the state or took up residency long enough to earn them an honorary title of a true Virginian.

Some of the famous names honored in the Virginia Beach legends walk include the dark poet and writer Edgar Allen Poe, the first President George Washington, and Patsy Cline the country music queen herself. Other important honorees include Pocahontas, Chief Powhatan and Captain John Smith, just to name a few. On May 19th, 2016, Doug Wilder, America's first elected black governor was inducted.

The walk is sponsored by different corporations who currently have plans to expand it all the way out to the oceanfront boardwalk. Expansion will make room for even more inductees. Inductees can be nominated by anyone, but are officially chosen by various judges such as the heads of various historical societies, the Presidents of colleges, and the heads of public libraries, as well as other outstanding figures in the communities of Virginia. There is an annual event to announce the newest additions to the Legends Walk.

If you are a local then come brush up on your heritage. If you are visiting the Virginia Beach area then make sure you take a stroll through the Legends Walk. You are sure to learn things you never knew about all the contributions made by native and honorary Virginians! It’s a great experience for the whole family.
